What Is a Random Name Generator?
A random name generator is a tool that selects names for you from prepared lists, in an order you cannot predict. Instead of trying to invent something on demand, you see a batch of options at once and react to them. Reacting is far easier than inventing, which is why a shuffled list usually gets you to a decision faster than a long brainstorm does.
This generator works entirely inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, there is no account, and there is no limit on how many times you can press the button. Person-name categories draw from curated lists organised by region and by gender. Business names, gaming tags and usernames are assembled from word lists at the moment you press generate, so those categories can produce combinations that have never appeared before.
How to Use the Generator
- Pick a category. This is the single biggest choice, because each category draws from its own data. Baby names and character names behave very differently from gaming tags.
- Choose a style. Classic favours long-established names, Modern favours contemporary ones, Unique favours uncommon entries, Short prefers names of five characters or fewer, Creative allows inventive forms, and International applies no style preference at all. Style sorts the batch rather than truncating it: the closest matches come first, and the rest of the batch is filled from the wider list when a style matches only a handful of names.
- Set a region. Region applies to baby, male, female, unisex and character names. Categories such as fantasy, gaming, business and username are not tied to a region, so the control is disabled for them.
- Choose how many names. Anything from 5 to 50 per batch. A batch never repeats a name.
- Generate, then keep what you like. Copy a single name, copy the whole batch, or press the heart to save a name to your favourites.
Whenever the filters could not fill a batch on style alone, a short note under the results tells you exactly how many names matched, so you always know what you are looking at.
What Can You Use Random Names For?
Naming problems appear in a lot of unrelated places, which is why a general tool is more useful than a narrow one:
- Shortlisting baby names. Parents often know the feel they want long before they can name a single example. Browsing a batch surfaces options you would never have recalled unprompted.
- Writing fiction and running games. Novelists, screenwriters and game masters need a cast quickly, and stopping to agonise over a minor character breaks the flow of the work.
- Gaming and streaming handles. Short, memorable tags that are easy to say on voice chat and easy to type.
- Naming a pet. Reading names aloud is the real test, since you will be calling this one across a park.
- Early-stage business ideas. A generated list is a starting point for testing how a name sounds, not a finished decision.
- Placeholder and sample data. Mockups, tutorials, workshop scenarios and test accounts all need plausible names immediately.
Many people use a generator not to find one final answer, but to widen the field first. Generating thirty names and rejecting twenty-nine still teaches you what you actually want, and the one you keep is usually better than your first instinct.
Popular Name Categories
Every category below is available in the generator above.
Baby Names
Male, female and unisex given names from twelve regional lists, with meanings shown where they are well documented.
Male & Female Names
The same regional lists filtered to one gender, useful when you already know what you need.
Unisex Names
Names commonly given to any gender, drawn from each region’s own unisex list rather than assumed.
Fantasy Names
Invented names for elves, mages, kingdoms and tabletop campaigns. These carry no meaning, because they have no linguistic history.
Character Names
Full names built by pairing a regional given name with a regional surname, so they read like real people.
Gaming Names
Two-part tags assembled from word lists, with an optional number when you choose the Unique style.
Pet Names
Names that suit dogs, cats, rabbits and everything in between, with short options for easy calling.
Business Names & Usernames
Brandable compounds and lowercase handles, generated fresh each time from word lists.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the random name generator free?
Yes. Every category, style, region and feature is free, with no trial period, usage cap or paid version.
Do I need an account to save names?
No. Favourites are stored in your own browser using local storage, so nothing is sent to us and no sign-up is required. The trade-off is that your list is tied to that browser: it will not follow you to another device, and clearing your browser data removes it. Use Copy Favourites to keep a permanent copy somewhere else.
Can the same name appear twice in one batch?
No. Each batch is shuffled and then de-duplicated before it is shown, so a name never repeats within a single result set. Separate batches are independent, so a name you saw earlier can appear again later.
Can I use a generated business name for my company?
We cannot tell you whether any generated name is available, and we make no claim that it is. Business names are assembled from ordinary words, which means a combination may already be registered as a company name or trademark, or already in use as a domain. Before you commit, search your national company register and trademark database, and check the domain and social handles yourself. If real money is involved, a trademark attorney is worth the fee.
Where do the name meanings come from?
Meanings are shown only for names with a well-documented etymology, and they are deliberately brief. Many names have disputed or unknown origins, and invented names such as fantasy names and gaming tags have none at all. In those cases no meaning is shown rather than a guess, so an empty space means we did not have reliable information.
Why does the Region control sometimes turn off?
Region only makes sense for categories built from real-world name lists: baby, male, female, unisex and character names. Fantasy, gaming, pet, business and username categories are not tied to any region, so the control is disabled and the label explains why.
Why did I get fewer names than I asked for?
Style is treated as a preference rather than a hard cut-off. If a narrow combination matches fewer names than your batch size, the closest style matches are shown first and the rest of the batch is filled from the wider list for that category, with a note telling you how many actually matched. If the entire list is smaller than the batch you asked for, you get everything available and a note saying so. Names are never repeated to pad the number.
Does the generator work on mobile?
Yes. The controls stack into a single column on small screens, buttons are sized for touch, and copying and saving names work the same way they do on a desktop browser.
